Humidifier Size Calculator

Estimate the amount of moisture a humidifier may need to add each day using home size, ceiling height, current relative humidity, target humidity, temperature and estimated air leakage.

Calculate Humidifier Capacity
Whole-Home Humidifier Capacity

Estimate how much moisture the home may need each day.

This calculator focuses on dry indoor conditions. For the opposite problem, use the dehumidifier size calculator . Persistent whole-home dryness can also be researched through our whole-home humidifier guide .

Calculate Estimated Humidification Demand

Enter the home's size and humidity conditions to estimate daily moisture addition.

Enter conditioned square footage.
Use a hygrometer reading when available.
Avoid humidifying above 50% indoor RH.
This is a planning assumption, not a blower-door measurement.
Estimated Daily Moisture Demand - -

This calculation estimates moisture needed to raise the humidity of air exchanged through the home from the current RH to the selected target RH. Real humidifier sizing also depends on outdoor weather, envelope moisture buffering, internal moisture, HVAC runtime and equipment delivery efficiency.

How is the moisture estimate calculated?

The calculator estimates the home's air volume, converts it to cubic meters, estimates saturated water-vapor density at the selected indoor temperature, then calculates the moisture difference between current and target relative humidity. That difference is applied to the estimated volume of air replaced each hour.

Humidity limit: do not use a larger humidifier simply to force indoor humidity higher. If condensation forms on windows, walls or other surfaces, reduce humidifier output. EPA advises against humidifying indoor air above 50% relative humidity.
